Ethics and Justice in HPSR

The Ethics and Justice Thematic Working Group (TWG) promotes ethics and justice issues and concerns as core and shared responsibilities across the field of health policy and systems research (HPSR). Beyond emphasizing the recognition of ethical dimensions of HPSR, we are committed to highlighting strategies for weaving a justice lens in formal and ‘everyday’ ways across all phases of research, policy and practice.

We seek to highlight the importance of continuously integrating ethics and justice as central elements in the design and implementation of HPSR towards reducing health disparities and enhancing health system performance for underserved populations globally.

We continue to actively engage with stakeholders (both within and outside HSG) and several networks working in or shaping dialogue in emerging global health priorities to foster collaboration and drive innovation in addressing key health challenges.

  • Extend dialogues with networks working on decolonisation, antimicrobial resistance, climate change, indigenous ethics, and conflict resolution to better understand the ethics dimensions relevant to health systems
  • Generate new ethics knowledge on how health systems research and health systems can advance social, environmental, and ecological justice while navigating the tensions between them
  • Promote interest in HPSR ethics and empirical ethics research especially among early career researchers, including through demonstrating its practical application and value
  • Identify specific opportunities and challenges for HSG (as a key HPSR actor) to promote ethics and justice across the field more widely.

  • Hosting webinars, meetings, conference panels and discussions to facilitate field building
  • Disseminating news, information, publications, experiences and opportunities to TWG members and beyond through newsletters and emails
  • Promoting interest in ethics and justice by facilitating sessions on HPSR ethics for researchers, health systems practitioners and policy makers and co-creating resources (e.g. a primer on ethics and justice in health systems and policy)
  • Promoting exchange of learnings on HPSR ethics and justice in diverse ways including blogs and conferences
  • Supporting sensitization activities on ethics and justice in health systems and policy making at national, state and organizational levels.
