The Alliance and HSG webinar series: The Thanzi La Onse Healthcare System Model for Malawi – 2 September 2025

News type: HSG News

The second webinar in our Health Systems Modelling Series, The Thanzi La Onse Healthcare System Model for Malawi, explored the development and application of a country-specific model to support health policy in Malawi.

If you missed the webinar or would like to revisit the discussion, the full recording is available to watch here on the HSG YouTube.

Webinar Theme Overview:

Professor Tim Hallett, from Imperial College London, explains the Thanzi La Onse approach to healthcare system modelling in Malawi, and describes example analyses that cover the impact of health system strengthening and resource allocation decision-making. This is followed by reflections from researchers, policymakers and development partners on the use of this approach and broader opportunities and challenges to enhancing the use of health systems modelling to inform decision-making in LMIC health systems.

Speakers:

  • Professor Tim Hallett, Imperial College, London
  • Dr. Dominic Nkhoma, Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, Malawi
  • Dr. Zubin Shroff, Alliance for Health Policy and Systems Research, WHO, Geneva

The Alliance for Health Policy and Systems Research and Health Systems Global (HSG) are working together on a programme of work on Health Systems Impact Modelling.

This includes the development of modelling approaches to measure the impact of health systems strengthening (HSS) interventions on essential health services in three countries: Ethiopia, Indonesia and Kenya. It also includes bringing together a wider group of stakeholders from around the world to exchange experiences around the use of health systems modelling, share best practices, and catalyse the creation of a community of researchers, policymakers and programme implementers interested in the use of health systems modelling to inform policy and practice in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

The first webinar in this series took place on 3 June 2025: Modeling for Impact: Strengthening Indonesia’s Health System through AMHASS. If you missed it and would like to see a recording, find it here on HSG's YouTube channel.
