Curbing Corruption in Health in LMICS
The Covid-19 pandemic has created new opportunities for corruption and rent-seeking across the world.The most severely affected settings have experienced shortages in shortages in hospitals beds, as well as life-saving commodities, such as oxygen cylinder, Covid-19 therapeutics, and vaccines.This has resulted in the creation of informal economies and bribery to access health and hospital services.While reports of corruption in the health sector during Covid-19 have been rampant, a number of anti-corruption programs and policies have been considered, in in some cases implemented at the national levels. Some of these have been effective, while others have failed to achieve the necessary outcomes at country-level. We believe that there are also several untold stories, experiences and examples of addressing corruption at the grassroots level–in individual-level interactions at health facilities, pharmacies, neighbourhood medicine dispensaries, and other local venues. These localized solutions could contribute to global learning on effective anti-corruption approaches.
A Crowdsourcing Call to find Anti-corruption Ideas and Solutions in LMICs
This crowdsourcing call focus on identifying, documenting and disseminating ideas, initiatives and solutions from low-and middle-income countries to counter corruption and improve accountability in the health sector during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The goals are:
- To identify new creative ideas or currently unknown solutions on anti-corruption.
- To build evidence on what works and what doesn’t, such that global progress can be made.
- To share and showcase ideas, initiatives and solutions to promote greater awareness and support replication.
What are we looking for?
We are looking in two areas:
TRACK A: SOLUTIONS
We are looking for strategies, initiatives, experiences or solutions which have been implemented for at least 6-months, in a low-and middle-income country
TRACK B: IDEAS
We are also looking for new, creative and bold ideas on how corruption can be curbed in low- and middle-income countries.
Who can participate?
This call is open to anyone! Whether you have developed an idea or a solution as an individual or as part of your organization, we want to hear from you.
- Individuals – citizens, health workers, students, researchers, policy makers and entrepreneurs etc.
- Organizations – universities, non-governmental organizations, governments, private companies, bi-lateral agencies etc.
How to share your idea or solution?
We have tried to make sharing your idea or solution with us as easy as possible. There are two options:
- Written – Complete the online form OR
- Video – Share a short 5-minute video
Each submission should be structured to answer four questions:
- What is the governance or corruption problem that the intervention is seeking to solve?
- How does or could the idea, initiative or solution work and how has or could it been implemented?
- Who are the actors involved in the process?
- To what extent has it or would it solve (or not solve) the corruption problem, and how can it be made better?
Submissions can be shared in English, Spanish and French. Please submit through the links below:
Selection Timeline and Process
We have established an independent review panel who will be assessing your submission, against the following criteria:
| Innovativeness | The idea or solutions present a unique and creative approach that challenges the status quo |
| Collaboration | The extent to which multiple stakeholders are participating in the development or implementation of the idea or solution |
| Sustainability | The idea or solution has the potential to deliver on its intended goals |
Benefits of Participating
The three most promising ideas or solutions will be offered a registration and a chance to present their work (in-person or virtually) at the Health Systems Global Symposium in Bogota from 31 October – 3 November 2022.
We would also be sharing and showcasing your work via publications and communication materials with key actors in global health.
