We are excited to announce the theme for the Fifth Global Symposium: Advancing health systems for all in the SDG era, which will take place in Liverpool, UK, from 8 to 12 October 2018.
The Alma Ata vision of ‘Health for All’ remains as compelling today as it was in 1978, as reflected in the SDG 3 health goal. But the world has changed in forty years. Despite improved health outcomes, there remain extraordinary challenges for health equity and social inclusion, such as demographic and disease transitions, conflicts and their subsequent migrations, pluralistic health systems and markets, and climate change. Political systems still marginalize those most in need. Yet there are new opportunities for health systems to achieve universal coverage.
The Fifth Global Symposium, Advancing health systems for all in the SDG era, will take forward conversations and collaborations on new ways of financing health, delivering services and engaging the health workforce, new social and political alliances, and new applications of technologies to promote health for all.
The HSR2018 Executive Committee, Programme Working Group, Local Organising Group, and the HSG Board would like to thank everyone who contributed to the wide ranging consultation process that informed the development of the HSR2018 theme. You can read more about the consultation in this blog post by the Programme Working Group.
We look forward to sharing more information about the Fifth Global Symposium in the coming months, including the call for abstracts later in 2017.
Kara Hanson (Chair, Programme Working Group) and Kabir Sheikh (HSG Board Chair, and Co-Chair of Symposium Executive Committee)
