2022: The Year Ahead

A New Year Message from the HSG Board Chair

Dear Members, Colleagues and Beyond,

Greetings! I hope you and your families had a safe and healthy entry into 2022.

I am excited about the plans and prospects for advancing our mission this year with renewed energy and priorities ahead of us. 2022 promises to be another important year for our Society with opportunities for substantive engagement with our members and the health policy and systems research (HPSR) community around the world.  I would like to take a moment to glance back at the progress we made during 2021 and highlight a few activities we are looking forward to in the coming year.

Global health remained a priority through another arduous year for people and planet as we experienced the continuing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic while simultaneously responding to other ongoing and emerging challenges and threats. Within this context, HSG found itself well positioned with creativity, flexibility, and steadfastness to drive strategic actions and engagement, primarily at the national and regional levels.   All of this would not have been possible without our proactive members, the leadership and guidance of the HSG Board and Secretariat, and the strengths of our networks, partnerships and HPSR community.

Over the past year, HSG launched the 2021-2025 cohort of Thematic Working Groups (TWGs.) after concluding a comprehensive renewal process. These ten multidisciplinary groups, serving as key platforms for our members and broader communities to foster dialogue, exchange experiences and collaborate toward innovative solutions around particular issues in health systems research. These Groups have been driving greater awareness, strengthened capacity, and the development of effective tools and resources. I encourage you to review the TWG focus areas and plans and join and engage with them in their important work.

On the Society’s strategic direction, we embarked on a comprehensive planning process to develop a 5-year strategic framework and identify high-level priorities up to 2025. This plan will align with the priorities of the Society and position our organization at the forefront of HPSR within the changing landscape of global health.  The process was inclusive, participatory and consultative with broad engagement across HSG membership, partners and other relevant constituencies. The strategic plan is near finalization and we are grateful for all for your future-focussed inputs. We look forward to sharing the plan with you in the coming weeks.

The Sixth Global Symposium on Health Systems Research (HSR2020) concluded its program in 2021 after pivoting to a global virtual event the year before, given the pandemic.  We invite you to view the sessions available on HSG’s Youtube channel as well explore some of the rich debates and discussions that took place in the Health Policy and Planning Special Supplement – Reimagining health systems for better health and social justice. Additionally, an independent Evaluation Report that was developed to assess HSR2020’s contribution toward achieving key HSG objectives was made available. We have been applying the learning and insights to preparations for the next Symposium.

This year, the Seventh Global Symposium on Health Systems Research (HSR2022) is scheduled from October 31-November 4, 2022 and will be held in Bogota, Colombia. It will be delivered in a hybrid (in-person and virtual) format enabling a more accessible and inclusive dialogue to address global health challenges. This would allow us to manage the uncertainty around travel and safety requirements that may emerge at that time. The #HSR2022 theme is ‘Health Systems Performance in the Political Agenda: Sharing lessons for current and future global challenges’ and the call for organized and individual session abstracts have been launched. Thank you for your inputs for theme development and we’ll continue to consult with you on forthcoming directions.  Our Regional Networks and TWGs have been planning supportive activities with pre-conferences in the Latin America and the Caribbean region, and a blended learning training program through Emerging Voices for Global Health (EV4GH) is underway.

We are geared up and have much to achieve together this year. Please keep active in the TWGs and Regional Networks, stay informed through the HSG monthly newsletter, Twitter, Facebook and Linkedin platforms and let us know how we can support your work.

Hoping that 2022 will be a better year for all and our Society will expand its reach and impact to help #BuildBackBetter for #TheWorldWeWant.

All my best,

Barbara McPake, HSG Board Chair
